The 2013 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore delivers many unexpected surprises. There is nothing standardized or predictable here. Instead, this fresh Nebbiolo is teaming with energy and verve that peels back with menthol layers, herbs, licorice and wild berry. Blue flowers and moist earth fill in the rear. One year of tonneaux has imparted accents of cinnamon and dark spice.

Plenty of dried-cherry, strawberry and watermelon undertones. Full body, firm tannins and a bright finish.

Delicately perfumed with red berry, violet and a whisper of chopped mint, this is a young, elegant expression of Nebbiolo. The bright, linear palate doles out crushed cherry, juicy strawberry, white pepper and cinnamon framed in lively acidity and polished tannins.

Macerated cherry, menthol and tobacco flavors mark this juicy, rich red. The dense matrix of tannins provides support on the long finish.
